A lot of the country is bracing for snow and/or freezing rain. Not me. I'm mentally preparing myself ready for bitter cold. Over the course of the next week, it's supposed to get below zero every day except for one, and on one of those days, the high temp will be below zero. It's supposed to get so cold that the news is warning about the possibility of exploding trees. I will clarify that we're a little bit south of that $h!+, but still... once we hit this time of year, I have a hard time getting warm at all. My hands and feet are virtually always cold.
Now that I've got the headline-grabbing sound bites out of the way, I should clarify that I really don't notice much of a difference between zero and -20. Once the thermometer dips that low, it's all kind of the same... just cold.
I'll leave with a personal anecdote about the cold. Back in the 90's I moved from the northern part of my state to the southern part. There was a blizzard the weekend I was scheduled to move. It was 50 below without the wind chill, and 90 below with it. It was so cold that weekend that the antifreeze in one of my cars froze. On top of that, we got a ton of snow. Fortunately, I was able to leave the car behind for a week. When I went back, it started right up, no damage. The body sucked on that car, but that engine was unstoppable.

Yikes- I forgot about the region you are in. You should move your entire Brood to South Carolina. But not mid-state.....The upstate is beautiful- lots of mountains and lakes and rivers close by, If you want to go to the beach for the weekend it's about a 4 hour drive. We get ice storms about once every 5 years, a good snow about every 10 years(not enough to shovel), and a blizzard- well.....once in a blue moon....and that's barely a shoveling event either.
Summers are hot and humid but a drive to the mountains can cure that.
I'll always be a Carolina Girl.
Oops, hit send a sentence too soon. :)
I defo couldn't take the temps in your neck of the woods.
I've contemplated moving over the years, and I just can't do it. I have roots here. I have friends here. I have family here. I grew up here and raised my children here. I'm tied to this place as if I were actually a farmer tied to his land.
The cold is really the only thing I strongly dislike about where I live, and I can mitigate that with good cold weather clothing and by staying inside. The fact is that no matter where I go, there will be something I dislike, meaning that no place is perfect. And even in the cold, there's something insanely serene about the silence that comes with a fresh snowfall.
Part of my purpose for the original post may or may not have been me humble bragging about how freaking tough I am, with my ability to tolerate a level of cold that many genuinely cannot tolerate. :)
You know my story- and I totally agree- it's HOME to us and ROOTS are everything. And yes- a freshly fallen snow is insanely calming and serene. And tbh- you are one tough cookie to be able to withstand such cold- My idea temp is 62 year round and I would perish in your temps!! Stay Warm and SAFE!!!
