I took a while off of playing after I quit taking lessons. Fortunately, the guitar is sitting in a place where I see it every day, so the time off was only a couple of months.
It was playing in the church band that really got me motivated though. It's so much fun learning new music, and playing with and for other people.
I'm at a point now where I can spend hours just noodling out rudimentary improvisations. I've suddenly found that my skills have surpassed the level of proficiency that I thought I'd ever possess, and I can now envision a day where I can say I'm a decent guitar player.
It's the way it works, a least in my experience... You practice and practice and get nowhere, then suddenly you get a lot better really fast...then you practice and practice and get nowhere again.
Playing with other people is also an absolute must. The Guitar is a 'social instrument' and it's just a ton of fun to play with other people.
I know I'll never be anything more than a hobbyist, but I still love to play.

I actually pulled out my acoustic yesterday after a months long hiatus.
I was pathetic...my fingertip calluses are completely gone and I had to quick after less than half an hour because my wrist was sore.
Sad to think I used to be able to play for hours and hours.
Oh, and if I find the guy who stole my SG, I will personally make a coin purse out of his scrotum
(that should say 'quit after', not 'quick after')
