Back Home, Safe and Sound

This is a repost... I accidentally deleted the original picture, and couldn't recover it. I found it easier to repost the whole damn thing than to keep dorking with fixing the screw-up...

Well, ladies and gentlemen, we made it back from our honeymoon in one piece. I did some blogging while we were down there, and I will be posting during the course of the week in order to fill you all in on some of the cool stuff we did and saw. Today's entry, courtesy of Mexicana Airlines, is about the trip down. Well, it starts out that way...

(This was originally written Wednesday, October 26)
Here I am, in paradise, on vacation, and what am I doing? I'm blogging! Man, sometimes I really wonder what's wrong with me! The fact is though, I'm addicted to blogging, and I got to the point where I just couldn't go any longer without writing about my experience. But hey, I've got to give myself a little credit. I made it six days.

The trip started on Friday after work, when the Mrs. and I packed our bags, spent some time with the kids, and took a short nap before heading out at midnight Saturday morning. We could have left several hours later by taking a flight from our city, but it was considerably more economical to drive to Chicago and fly out of there. We encountered a lot of road destruction on the way, but since we drove in the middle of the night, there wasn't any traffic and the one-lane driving wasn't a big inconvenience. We got to the airport at around 4:45 am and our flight didn't leave until ten. In other words we could have left a couple of hours later, but I haven't done any international traveling since 9/11, and I didn't know what to expect. The airline recommended that we show up three hours before the flight, and since it's our honeymoon and all, I figured it'd be better to arrive an hour too early, rather than a minute too late.

We flew Mexicana airlines. They got our seating request wrong on both flights, but that was more than offset by the service we received during the flights. Dudes!! They actually served us a full complimentary meal on the flight from Chicago to Mexico City, and all drinks -- including booze -- were free!! The food wasn't gourmet... after all, it was an airplane ride, not a cruise ship... but the fact that it wasn't the best meal I've ever had isn't the point. The point is that they took care of us. They fed us, the kept us liquored up, and the staff was incredibly attentive. The airlines in the U.S. should take a look back into their history, change their future, and maybe they'll have a chance at surviving. They need to stop being so greedy and remember service. Or, we could look at it in a slightly different way... a passenger who's liquored up isn't gonna be so bitchy and restless -- even if his flight is bumped. Hey pilots! You wanna keep flying that fancy plane? Shut up and take your pay cuts! Hey machinists, baggage handlers and flight attendants! Wanna keep food on your table? Shut up and take your pay cuts! Hey big, fat-cat CEO's! Do you want to be known as the people that finally drove your airline into oblivion? If not -- you guessed it -- shut your hole and take your paycut! You above all of the aforementioned groups! How about trying to lead by example!?

Well, that was an unexpected tirade. Here I was, trying to make a statement about what an awesome job Mexicana did at taking care of us, and I ended up bashing on our airlines, totally undermining my original point... if you go to Mexico, fly Mexicana. They'll take care of you.
